Steven Mike creates music wherever emotion leads, blending hip hop, pop punk energy, and acoustic storytelling into a sound that refuses to stay in one lane.
An independent artist with a passion for honest expression, Steven approaches music as a space for experimentation and storytelling. His songs move between styles naturally, shaped by feeling rather than genre labels. Whether it is a hip hop beat, a distorted pop punk guitar, or a quiet moment with an acoustic guitar, the goal is always the same, to capture something real.
As a completely blind musician, Steven experiences the world through sound first. Music becomes the way he interprets moments, emotions, and stories. What others see visually, he translates into rhythm, melody, and atmosphere, giving his work a perspective rooted deeply in listening and imagination.
Steven’s musical influences began early. Growing up, his home was filled with music from many directions. His grandparents, father, and uncles often played Mexican music throughout the house, while his older brother introduced him to hip hop and R and B on the radio. As he got older, he discovered rock and alternative bands from the 1990s such as Metallica, Creed, Tool, and Alice in Chains. By middle school he was listening to bands like Linkin Park, Blink 182, Green Day, Sum 41, and Simple Plan, which would later influence his interest in pop punk and alternative music.
At the age of 15, Steven received his first electric guitar, a First Act, as a Christmas gift. He began teaching himself how to play while exploring older rock and roll and soul music, listening to artists like Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, James Brown, Chubby Checker, and The Beatles. Around that same time he began teaching himself how to sing. Many nights were spent with the music turned up loud enough to hide his early attempts, even though family members sometimes heard him and joked about it. Still, he kept going.
At 22, Steven lost his sight due to glaucoma, a condition he had been born with. During that time he joined a pop punk band with a coworker and several friends called “Name Goes Here,” writing much of the band’s material. The band eventually dissolved due to creative differences and the challenges of adapting to working with a blind musician at a time when Steven himself was still learning how to navigate life without sight.
After the breakup, Steven spent several years in a period of deep depression, but continued writing songs throughout that time. Music remained one of the few ways he could process his experiences and emotions.
In 2016, he moved to Austin, Texas to pursue independence as a blind individual while continuing to develop his music. Since then, he has focused on writing, producing, and releasing music on his own terms. His songwriting often reflects personal themes including depression, relationships, anxiety, and the complexities of life and loss.
In 2022, Steven released the pop punk EP 2013. In 2025 he traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona to participate in a mentorship experience for blind musicians with American Idol finalist Scott MacIntyre. In January 2026 he released the lo fi hip hop album Ghost Static, a project built from older material he had written and recorded over the years along with newer songs.
His catalog reflects that creative freedom. Ghost Static explores introspective moods and textured production, while 2013 channels energetic guitars and emotionally driven songwriting. Rather than choosing a single direction, Steven continues pushing into new territory, experimenting with music that blends hip hop, emo, and pop punk influences.
Many of Steven’s songs begin in the simplest way possible, sitting with an acoustic guitar and letting whatever comes out guide the direction. Sometimes it becomes a hip hop track, sometimes a pop punk song, and sometimes something completely unexpected.
